Ranil Perera, General Manager of Hilton Da Nang, has been nominated for Vietnam’s Leading General Manager 2026. After three decades in hospitality, the conviction that guides him is simple: hotels are about people, and a leader’s real work is helping them grow.
A Journey of Three Decades
Mr. Perera trained at the Ceylon Hotel School and the Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development, then built his career with The Oberoi Group, Six Senses in the Maldives, the Taj group in Sri Lanka and Hilton Worldwide. In Da Nang, the warmth of the local people and the city’s remarkable growth have deepened his appreciation for the community, and for the impact hospitality can have on a destination.
Curious. People-Focused. Resilient.
These are the words Mr. Perera chose to describe himself. Curiosity means there is still something new to learn every day, from a guest, a colleague or even a difficult situation. On people, he is direct: “hotels are ultimately about people. We can have beautiful buildings and sophisticated technology, but it is the people who create the feeling that guests remember.” Resilience comes with the profession. “Hospitality teaches you that not every day will go according to plan,” he says. “What matters is how you respond, learn and come back stronger.”
Leadership Beyond Operations
“Early in my career, I thought leadership was largely about having the answers,” he reflects. “With experience, I realized that leadership is often about asking the right questions and creating an environment where other people can find the answers.” Today he defines great leadership as creating clarity, building trust and helping people achieve more than they thought possible. His benchmark comes from his own mentors: “The best leaders I have worked with did not make me dependent on them. They made me better without them.”
Shaping the Culture of Hilton Da Nang
At Hilton Da Nang, that philosophy has shaped a culture rooted in Hilton’s values of Hospitality, Integrity, Leadership, Teamwork, Ownership and Now. It rests on the principle that exceptional guest experiences begin with how team members are treated. Great Place to Work ranks Hilton as the leading Best Workplace in Asia, and the hotel carries that standard locally: it has recruited, trained and retained two differently-abled team members as full-time staff. Through Hilton’s Travel with Purpose, the From Grounds to Green initiative gives coffee waste a second life, and the team serves meals to children at the Village of Hope. Overlooking the Han River, the hotel has also delivered strong commercial performance, exceeding its profit targets.
Inspiring the Next Generation
“What still excites me is seeing people grow,” Mr. Perera says. He represents Vietnam on Hilton’s Southeast Asia Talent Council. Under his leadership, the hotel hosted its first-ever Leadership Training program for supervisors and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with FPT Polytechnic to nurture young talent. His advice to newcomers: “Don’t chase the title. Chase the learning.” And one more: “never become too senior to learn from someone junior to you.”
A Distinguished Contender
The nomination for Vietnam’s Leading General Manager 2026 recognises a hotelier whose influence reaches beyond operations. He builds independence rather than dependence. He shapes a culture where team members, guests and the community all benefit. And he invests deliberately in Da Nang’s next generation of hospitality leaders. These strengths place him among the most complete leaders in Vietnam’s hotel landscape today.
For Mr. Perera, hospitality is “where truth builds trust, connection creates belonging, and every experience has the power to make a difference.”
